Whose agenda are you living?

Change is now, handwriting with chalk on wooden frame blackboard, colored chalk in the corner, lifestyle change conceptI have one question for you today:

Whose agenda are you living?

So often we find ourselves doing things in order to be accepted by others. We worry what people would think of us. We say things, wear things, buy things, do things, and think things because we believe they will be pleasing or acceptable to other people.

I see this all of the time in my programs. Fully grown adults filled with anxiety over their parents’ opinion of them, still trying to get mom and dad’s approval at age 40, 50, 60. Younger people blaming, gossiping, and criticizing to go along with the crowd because they don’t have a path for themselves. [Read more…]

7 steps to change

You know how you feel when you fall off the diet and exercise wagon?

Maybe you give in to your sugar addiction and eat way too much junk food. Maybe you stop exercising on a regular basis and it just kind of slips away for a few days, weeks, or even months as you get busier and busier. Maybe you had your weight under control and then, in one weekend of bingeing, you’ve undone your progress.

That kind of slipping can quickly lead to giving up. The voice in your head convinces you that one more donut won’t hurt or that piece of birthday cake is so small (but you have three of them!). You soon find yourself in worse shape than you’ve been in a long time.

And then you stay there…for a long time. [Read more…]

This 1 thing will change your life, guaranteed!

choose progress not perfection concept handwritten on blackboard with heart symbol instead of OOK, I admit it. The headline sounds like an infomercial or a bad car salesman. The image of a snake oil salesman comes to mind hawking his magic elixir. “Step right up, ladies and gentlemen!”

You’ve heard over and over that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I agree with that…if someone else is telling you.

But this is me we’re talking about.

The difference between me and the snake oil salesman is that I have proof that this one thing will change your life. [Read more…]

There can be bickering and disagreements. Emotions flare and someone ends up crying or just pissed off.

As I write this, it’s Tuesday afternoon and I’m preparing to catch a plane on Thursday evening from Houston to New York. This trip has been on my mind for a while; it’s the 85th birthday celebration for my mother – a momentous occasion and a chance to get our clan of 11 kids plus nieces, nephews, spouses, and friends back together.

The predominant feeling I have is one of anticipation and expectation. I expect to have a great time. I expect there to be a lot of conversation and a lot of laughter.

What I don’t have is fear. I’m not dreading this trip at all. [Read more…]

What happened Thursday night?

You will make mistakes, learn from themYou won’t believe what happened on Thursday night.

I was attending the graduation reception for the Sheriff’s Institute for Ethical Leadership Development (SHIELD). The program is a seven-month mid-management leadership course established by Sheriff Greg Hamilton of Travis County Sheriff’s Office in 2013 that I’ve had the privilege to serve as an instructor in since its inception.

The gathering was held at the Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 racetrack here in Austin. The group was taken to the observation tower overlooking the field, reaching 251 feet above the field. Up and down in the elevator without a hitch. Ok, it was 102 degrees, but it’s summer in Texas, so that’s pretty much normal. [Read more…]
