When storms rage…



As I write this, there’s an epic storm raging outside: blinding lightning, rolling thunder, lashing winds. It’s about 2:00 am.

I get out of bed and walk around the place. Check the area by the bedroom balcony door where the rain seems to be coming in the house. All is dry.

I walk through the living room to make sure there are no leaks or other problems as a result of the pounding just on the other side of the thin pane of glass. [Read more…]

Strike while the iron’s cold

Have an idea

The phrase “strike while the iron’s hot” jumped into my mind the other day. We’ve all heard it before. A hard metal is easiest to shape when it’s hot. After it cools down, it will retain the shape it’s in at that time.

Basically, it means to take advantage of an opportunity while favorable conditions exist, before you lose your chance.

It’s a great idea, especially when you’re working as a blacksmith, but when’s the last time you did that?

Get out of your rut

Today is my birthday.

In anticipation of this day, my wife, Jennifer, asked what I wanted to do this past Saturday to commemorate it. She started asking me weeks ago.

You probably have no idea that I hate that question. Yes, I get up to speak in front of audiences large and small for a living, but, when it comes to my birthday, I’ve never been particularly comfortable being the center of attention.

I’d actually rather go and do what she’d like to do for my birthday. Of course, it doesn’t work that way, and she kept pressing me for an answer. [Read more…]
